District 95 Girls’ Education Initiative 2008-2009

Dear District 95 members,
I am very happy to share with you the success of our participation in the Girls’ Friendly Schools Initiative culminating in the protocol we signed with the NCCM: the National Council for Childhood & Motherhood with H.E. Minister/Ambassador, Moushira Khattab, our newly named Minister of Family and Population.

Since I started my duties as Chairman of District 95, I decided to encourage our clubs to participate in our IIW Social Project, Girls Education which we adopted in coordination with UNICEF- for a period of three years ending in 30-6-2009.
Our coordination meetings at the Ministry started in early October 2008 and with the help of our District Committee, I visited numerous clubs and talked about this endeavor. We were fortunate to have an established NCCM / UNICEF initiative in Egypt that is quite successful. Nineteen (19) of our clubs have signed protocols on December 24, 2008 in a great ceremony which made us all proud to be members of IIW and to be able to help our country in a much needed initiative: Girls' Education.
Our District Committee members and our NR helped me in encouraging all clubs to participate in this project and we are very happy indeed to see that our IW efforts have resulted in the adoption of 11 schools in 3 provinces.

The First Lady of Egypt, Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, the Chairperson of the Technical Advisory Committee of NCCM, launched the “GEI” Girls’ Education Initiative in January 2003.
This Initiative has opened and operated 1076 Girl Friendly schools from 2003 till 2008 in the following provinces: Sohag, Assuit, Menia, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Giza and Behira. These schools provide education for 29,000 girls in primary schools, age 6-13 years.

Egypt has ratified all international conventions related to providing the right to education for everyone without discrimination. Egypt has ratified all international conventions related to education, among which were Gomtian 1990 and Dakar 2000 which gave special consideration to girls education due to its relation to many other development issues facing any community such as population increase, poverty and illiteracy.

The GEI aims to reduce the gender gap in primary education as well as granting the quality education for girls living in rural and impoverished areas.

The GEI relies on several principles, among which are:
-       Support participation of civil society
-       Combating Poverty
-       Partnership with all stakeholders
-       Development of database, monitoring & evaluation

Congratulations to District 95, keep up the good work.

Best regards in Inner Wheel Friendship,

Ashnadelle Hilmy/Mortagy
